About Love
Over the last twenty years or so, it seems to me that love has gone out of fashion as we've become obsessed with money. I believe we've become a less caring society as we all grabbed our slice of the cake, wanting to make sure we don't miss out. We've become de-sensitised to our own humanity, our own innate caring skills, and has emphasised the "I'm better than you are" game, like a children's playground.
We seem to have lost our way, morally and ethically, communities have disappeared, families broken out, selfishness has taken the driving seat as what some people might call old-fashioned values have all but disappeared. Old people, once respected, are shunned and treated appallingly badly. Children are neglected, taught all the wrong values, and land up with worthless degrees. Once, people had a way of life; now we all aspire to hgaving a lifestyle to demonstrate our wealth and taste.
In the workplace, you never hear about the need to care for others, only about bottom line delivery, cost-effectiveness, and corporate growth. Stress is at an all time high, and resentment grows as the bosses vote themselves huge pay increases whilst employees are lucky to get anything. The NHS has become so obsessed with targets and cost-effectiveness that caring for people has all but disappeared in many hospitals, as a recent report demonstrated. We've lost the understanding that caring for, and about others, whether at home, work or anywhere else, is the lifeblood of what makes us human, and is life-affirming.
So it's time that love made a comeback, and we all realise that helping, and caring for, others, and being kind and respectful, need to be core values in how we behave as human beings.
